Euro 2020: Your ultimate guide to the round of 16

Twenty-four teams from the group stages were whittled down to 16 for the knockout rounds, with the remaining nations plotting their route to European Championship glory.

Hungary followed Turkey, Finland, Russia, North Macedonia, Scotland, Slovakia and Poland in exiting Euro 2020 at the group stage.

The round of 16 began on Saturday, June 26 with two games scheduled to take place each day, concluding on Tuesday, June 29.

June 26 - Match 38: Wales 0-4 Denmark

Kasper Dolberg starred on his former stomping ground in Amsterdam as Denmark stormed to a 4-0 victory over Wales to progress to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

In for the injured Yussuf Poulsen, ex-Ajax striker Dolberg became the first Denmark player to score twice in a Euro knockout game since Henrik Larsen in 1992 with two clinical finishes.

June 26 - Match 37: Italy 2-1 Austria (after extra-time)

Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina scored in extra time as Italy beat Austria 2-1 to move into the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

The win set a new national record as they extended their unbeaten run to 31 games, surpassing the 30-game streak posted under Vittorio Pozzo between 1935 and 1939.

Marko Arnautovic saw an effort ruled out by VAR in the second half as Austria threatened to cause an upset at Wembley Stadium, but substitutes Chiesa and Pessina booked the Azzurri's last-eight spot with clinical finishes in the first half of extra time, although Sasa Kalajdzic did set up a frantic finish with his 114th-minute effort.

June 27 - Match 40: Netherlands 0-2 Czech Republic

The Czech Republic reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 with a surprise 2-0 win over the Netherlands, who had Matthijs de Ligt sent off.

A close game in Budapest swung the way of Jaroslav Silhavy's men 55 minutes in when De Ligt was dismissed for a deliberate handball that prevented Patrik Schick from having a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Tomas Holes then headed in the opening goal before superbly setting up Schick for the second as the Czech Republic progressed to the last eight, where they face Denmark.

June 27 - Match 39: Belgium 1-0 Portugal

Belgium ended Portugal's European Championship defence with a 1-0 win in Seville, despite losing Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard to injuries in the last-16 clash.

With both sides facing a daunting route to Euro 2020 glory, it was Belgium who emerged to reach a quarter-final tie against in-form Italy thanks to Thorgan Hazard's long-range strike.

June 28 - Match 42: Croatia 3-5 Spain (aet)

Extra-time goals from Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal saw Spain into the quarter-finals after an eight-goal thriller against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia.

Pedri's early own goal gave Croatia the lead before goals from Pablo Sarabia, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres looked to have secured a routine victory for Spain.

However, Croatian subs Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic struck in the final five minutes to send the game to extra time.

Spain were dominant in the additional 30 minutes. First, Morata arrowed a shot into the roof of the net before Oyarzabal finished the game off shortly after.

June 28 - Match 41: France 3-3 (aet, 4-5 on pens) Switzerland

Favourites France were knocked out by unfancied Switzerland on penalties after a 3-3 draw after extra time.

Haris Seferovic put the Swiss ahead before Hugo Lloris saved Ricardo Rodriguez's penalty to deny Switzerland a 2-0 lead.

Within minutes, Karim Benzema had hit a quick-fire brace to put Les Bleus 2-1 up.

Paul Pogba stretched France's lead to 3-1 before Seferovic scored again and Mario Gavranovic struck in the dying minutes to send the game to extra time.

The sides could not be separated and penalties were required. After trading nine well-taken spot kicks, Kylian Mbappe saw his effort saved by Yann Sommer to condemn France to a surprise exit.

June 29 - Match 44: England 2-0 Germany

Twenty-five years after Gareth Southgate's costly penalty miss against Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 1996, England got revenge.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, his first of these European Championships, sent the Three Lions into the last eight at Wembley.

Germany had the better chances at 0-0 – most notably when Timo Werner was denied after going through one-on-one – but England were deserved winners.

The introduction of Jack Grealish changed the game with the Aston Villa skipper playing a part in both goals in the final 15 minutes.

June 29 - Match 43: Sweden 1-2 Ukraine (aet)

Artem Dovbyk's goal in stoppage time of extra time saw Ukraine through to the last eight at the expense of 10-man Sweden.

Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko go the opening with a ferocious strike but Emil Forsberg equalised just before half time with a deflected effort.

Sweden saw Marcus Danielson dismissed in extra time following a VAR check on a poor challenge.

In the first minute of stoppage time at the end of the additional 30 minutes, Dovbyk headed in a close-range winner for Ukraine. 

That sets up a quarter-final tie between Ukraine and England in Rome on Saturday evening.
