England hero Toone hails Lionesses' 'character' in dramatic comeback win

England hero Ella Toone hailed her team's character after coming off the bench to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over the Netherlands.

Lineth Beerensteyn's first-half double stunned the Wembley crowd but the Lionesses came roaring back through Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp after the break.

And Toone struck with minutes left to complete the comeback.

She told ITV: "It is always nice to get on the scoresheet.

"The main thing was to win and we did that. I knew my role was to come on and change the game in any way that I could. What a ball from LJ [Lauren James]. We showed a lot of character to get the win."

Toone praised England boss Sarina Wiegman for her changes as the hosts kept their chances of getting Team GB into the Olympics alive.

She added: "It was all a bit of blur. 

"Sarina just said to make an impact, attack, press and express ourselves. The subs she made really did that. It was a great comeback. It was three good goals.

"I thought we played really well. even at two goals down we dominated the game, and it was two errors from us. The character was huge from us, and it was nice to get the win. 

"The game against Scotland will be massive. But every game we play is big because everyone wants to beat England, we've got a target on our backs. 

"We'll go there with a gameplan and wanting to get the win."

England must beat Scotland and hope Belgium can take a result from the Netherlands in the final round of group games to reach the finals and ensure they have a shot of playing at the Olympics.
