Hayes admits Chelsea's dire display in Arsenal defeat drove her mad

Emma Hayes joked the only positive aspect of Chelsea's 4-1 Women's Super League loss to Arsenal was her short commute home from the Emirates. 

It was a complete performance from the Gunners in front of a WSL attendance record crowd of 59,042 in North London, where Alessia Russo scored two goals and Beth Mead and Amanda Ilestedt also struck. 

The result drew the hosts level on 22 points with league leaders Chelsea, who denied Arsenal a clean sheet via Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's first-half strike.

Asked about what positives she could take from the game, Hayes said: "I've got a 20-minute drive home.

"I’m not going to make any excuses. That's as bad as I've seen us for a long time. 

"You play top-level games, lots of our players have. Arsenal had four shots on goal in the first half and [scored] three goals, all of them which quite frankly if we want to compete we have to be better than that. 

"The first half at 3-1 makes the game difficult but the better team won by a country mile. 

"They bullied us, I thought they dominated in the duels, I think all phases of our play were poor. 

"This is not about particular individuals. I think as a team we were disappointing. 

"We couldn't execute the basic things, and even when we did so well to win the ball back we gave it away again. 

"We lacked control across the pitch and I have a dressing room that will acknowledge and own that. We've been here before. That's not our best today. In fact, that's probably our very worst."
