Romelu Lukaku cannot wait to play for Chelsea again

Romelu Lukaku is desperate to get back to action with misfiring Chelsea — but is refusing to let testing positive for coronavirus get him down.

The Belgian hitman was forced to sit out last night’s 1-1 draw against Everton, which saw the Blues drop more precious points in the title race.

He had been in line to start his first Premier League game since mid-October but was one of the victims of a small outbreak within Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

And Lukaku, 28, took to Instagram today to thank his fans for their messages of support.

He posted: "A few days ago I tested positive for coronavirus. I am feeling good now and I am in isolation for the next days.

"I’ve seen the messages so thank you for that. Stay safe people."

Lukaku, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and the injured Ben Chilwell all tested positive for coronavirus this week.

The Blues are in the middle of a frustrating spell of inconsistent results but appeared to have turned the corner after snatching a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Leeds last Saturday.

However, Rafa Benitez’s depleted Toffees ensured the home side did not make it back-to-back wins at Stamford Bridge.

After Mason Mount broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, Tuchel cut a frustrated figure on the touchline when Jarrad Branthwaite scored his first goal for the Merseysiders just four minutes later to level matters.

With Chelsea now trailing leaders Manchester City by four points, the Blues boss will be hoping he does not lose more players to the virus.

Speaking before last night’s game, he said: "The results are the results and the situation is the situation.

"We still have a strong squad — one we want to push forward and that should be able to compete.

"Like always, we focus on the guys who are there."

Chelsea are due to travel to Wolves on Sunday before facing Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
