Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino believes Levi Colwill can become "one of the greatest centre-backs in England" after his impressive pre-season showing against Brighton on Saturday.

The defender, 20, played 81 minutes of the Blues' 4-3 victory over the Seagulls in what was an action-packed opening fixture of the Premier League Summer Series.

Colwill spent last season on loan at Brighton, where he made 22 appearances across all competitions and further enhanced his reputation as one of his nation's hottest prospects.

The defender also helped the Young Lions win the European Under-21 Championship — and was named in UEFA's Team of the Tournament — before joining up with his club team-mates for their USA tour.

Asked to give his thoughts on Colwill after the win at Lincoln Financial Field, Pochettino said: "Levi has had a few days [in training] and I think he is nearly fit.

"Of course, why we play with him is because we need to share minutes with different players — and I think he is in a good form.

"I am happy with him, his performance was good. Better than what I expected because it is only the first game with us after the season with Brighton.

"I am so happy, he can be one of the greatest centre-backs in England."

Chelsea chance

Colwill joined Chelsea in 2011 and has progressed through the club's youth system, although he has yet to make a first-team appearance in a competitive match.

He has played 26 times for the West Londoners' U-21 side, however, scoring once in a 2020-21 Premier League 2 clash against Manchester City.

But with Kalidou Koulibaly having departed Stamford Bridge — and Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile both injured — the ex-Huddersfield loanee now looks primed for a regular starting berth alongside veteran centre-back Thiago Silva.

And if he can continue to impress at the heart of Pochettino's defence next season, a place in Gareth Southgate's England XI alongside John Stones at Euro 2024 is a distinct possibility.
