Fernandes earns Portugal slim victory while Spain hit seven

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal beat Slovakia 1-0 on Friday to continue their perfect Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. 

Manchester rivals aligned for the only goal as Bernardo Silva found Bruno Fernandes, who thumped home a rocket into the corner on his 29th birthday.

Roberto Martinez's side have now taken an impressive 15 points from 15 available.

Portugal will fully expect to continue this run when they face Luxembourg on Monday.

Elsewhere, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player and scorer for Spain in a devastating 7-1 Euro 2024 qualifying win against Georgia.

Yamal, 16, came on for Dani Olmo just before half-time and grabbed Spain's seventh goal in the 74th minute.

The more experienced Alvaro Morata was at his clinical best with a hat-trick while Olmo and Nico Williams also found the back of the net. 

A first-half Solomon Kvirkvelia own goal rather summed up Georgia's miserable evening. 

Spain will look to use the thrashing as momentum going into their clash against Cyprus on Tuesday, where a win should be a formality.

Catching leaders Scotland looks to be an impossible task in Group A, though, with Steve Clarke's side beating the Cypriots 3-0 on Friday to continue their impressive run.

Scott McTominay, who played in a much more advanced role, opened the scoring to bag his sixth goal of the qualifying campaign — the joint-highest total recorded so far.

Watford's Ryan Porteous and Aston Villa's John McGinn then secured the all-important three points. 

The victory means Scotland are within touching distance of booking their plane tickets to Germany — a draw between Norway and Georgia on Tuesday would clinch qualification for the Tartan Army.
