Dortmund vs PSV predictions: Old hands to put PSV in their place

Borussia Dortmund have the slight upper hand against PSV after drawing 1-1 in Eindhoven in the first leg.

Edin Terzic's German powers are knockout stage regulars in this competition and would hope to use that experience to see off the Eredivisie's runaway leaders at a vibrant Signal Iduna Park.

Team news

Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck is suspended, which means Niklas Sule is expected to line up alongside Mats Hummels at the heart of Dortmund's defence.

Striker Sebastien Haller is also out with an ankle injury.

PSV will line up in a 4-3-3 minus flying winger Noa Lang, who is out for the season with a hamstring problem.

Peter Bosz does have doubts over a couple of key midfielders — in Johan Veerman and Ismail Saibari — with Mauro Junior standing by.

Dortmund, winless in six going into the winter break, have lost just one of 13 in all competitions since the resumption.

The Germans are unbeaten in their last eight home Champions League ties — four wins, four draws — and have conceded only two goals in that time. 

PSV have failed to win 18 of their last 23 away ties in the Champions League.

Since a 4-0 group-stage drubbing at Arsenal in September, they have lost just one of their last 29 matches in all competitions.

Prediction

It seems a long time ago that Dortmund dominated a qualifying group also featuring Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle, but it shows what a top side the Germans still are.

And, given that they are better now than they were in the autumn, take Terzic's troops to build on the first-leg 1-1 draw in Eindhoven and ease into the last eight.

The Germans have looked in really decent form since the winter break with a couple of key signings in returning hero Jadon Sancho and Dutch full-back Ian Maatsen.

Both have improved Dortmund, who have lost just one of their last 13.

At the Signal Iduna Park fortress they rarely lose European matches, whereas this is relatively new territory for PSV, who have not featured in the knockout rounds since 2015-16.

Bosz's men are in fine form domestically – they have not lost a single game this season in the Eredivisie, which they lead by 10 points.

But this is a step up and while they more than held their own in the first game, the return trip is going to be that much tougher and a challenge which may well be beyond them.
