Bayer Leverkusen vs Inter Milan predictions: Italians to keep it tight again
- Inter are second in the table with 13 points from a possible 15
- Hosts Bayer Leverkusen are well placed in sixth position
- Recommended Bet: Under 2.5 goals
Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen come into this match off the back of a fruitful week, having knocked their rivals Bayern Munich out of the DFB Pokal and then won 2-1 against St Pauli in the Bundesliga.
Inter were in action on Friday night and enjoyed a 3-1 win at the San Siro against Parma to extend an unbeaten run that stretches back to September.
Team news
Leverkusen will be without some of their best attacking talent, with Amine Adli, Victor Boniface, Jonas Hofmann and Patrik Schick all missing with injuries.
Inter’s French defender Benjamin Pavard is out until January due to a hamstring strain.
Goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro and centre-back Francesco Acerbi are also doubts for the Nerazzurri, having missed the victory against Parma.
The stats
Leverkusen’s win against St Pauli over the weekend was their fifth straight victory across all competitions.
Inter’s victory against Parma means that they are now unbeaten in 13 matches, winning 11 and drawing twice.
Only the leaders Liverpool have beaten Leverkusen in the Champions League this season and the Germans have won their two home games without conceding a goal.
Inter are the only team that have yet to concede a goal in this season’s Champions League and have won each of their last three games in the competition by a 1-0 scoreline.
Prediction
In a competition in which not every team’s fixture list is created equal, Leverkusen have had the misfortune of facing the top two sides in the Champions League table.
Their trip to Anfield to face Liverpool saw them lose 4-0, but they can expect a closer encounter against Inter, whose five games in this competition have only produced seven goals.
None of those seven goals have come at the Inter end and though Die Werkself are in fine attacking fettle with 15 goals from their last five games, a low-scoring match looks likely.
While the Nerazzurri have been in free-scoring form in Serie A, where they have plundered 34 goals from 14 games, their success in the Champions League this season has largely been built upon defensive reliability.
Keeping five clean sheets in this competition is no mean feat, with Inter having already faced Manchester City, Arsenal and RB Leipzig, so we should expect them to largely contain a Leverkusen attack missing key personnel.
