Alvaro Morata bagged a brace to help Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 3-1 in a pulsating derby.

The Spanish striker headed the hosts in front from close range four minutes into the game after a pin-point cross from Samuel Lino.

Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead by rising unmarked inside the Real Madrid box to power home his effort past the outstretched arm of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Toni Kroos halved the deficit before half-time with a brilliant feint to open some space on the edge of the box before drilling his shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

However, immediately after the break, Morata responded with his second of the game when he directed Saul Niguez's looping delivery into the back of the net.

In the end, Real Madrid could not find a way through a stubborn Diego Simeone defence and were handed their first defeat of the season.

Atletico had only won one of their previous 15 Madrid derbies, losing six and drawing eight, so the three points will come as a welcome boost.

Morata continued his outstanding start to the season with two more goals to take his scoring tally to five after five league appearances.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham tasted defeat in Real Madrid colours for the first time despite his blistering form for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

The result sees Atleti move up to fifth, while Real stay in third behind Girona and the defending LaLiga champions Barcelona, who hold on to the top spot after their comeback win against Celta Vigo.
