Ollie Watkins says Aston Villa feel they can win any game under Unai Emery after the striker scored the winner in a 2-1 comeback win over AZ Alkmaar.

The Villans edged closer to the Europa Conference League knockout stage with the win at Villa Park, with Diego Carlos cancelling out an opener by Vangelis Pavilidis.

It was Villa's 15th win in 16 home games in all competitions and third straight success in Europe which sees them stay level on points with Legia Warsaw at the top of Group E.

Watkins, 27, told TNT Sports: "Going into any game, whether it's home or away, we feel confident that we can win.

"Our home form has obviously been a lot better than our away form so if we can turn our away form and make that a bit better then it's going to be a really good season."

Watkins netted his 10th goal of what continues to be an excellent season by heading substitute Douglas Luiz's cross past Mat Ryan.

The England striker said: "Dougie has seen me and I've ran in behind.

"I thought it was close actually so I didn't celebrate. I thought it was tight and maybe offside, you never know with VAR.

"Thankfully I was onside and I got the goal to help my team win so I'm happy with that."

Emery's men had to dig deep to secure the three points against a much-improved Alkmaar side from Villa's 4-0 win in the Netherlands a fortnight ago.

Watkins added: "When you play teams twice they study you and have a chance to put it right the next time.

"They came and made it really difficult for us tonight but we've won the game and that's all that matters."

Watkins' goal was the perfect way to celebrate his call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad for the second straight time earlier today.

He said: "I'm really enjoying it. The team is playing good football. I'm getting good chances.

"So I can't complain and I'm delighted to be called up again."
