Five talking points from Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City (4-1 pens)

Arsenal won the 2023 Community Shield by beating rivals Manchester City 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Leandro Trossard's 101st minute deflected goal cancelled out a stunning opener from Cole Palmer, which sent the Wembley encounter to a shootout.

Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri both missed their spot kicks, with Fabio Vieira converting the winning penalty for the North Londoners.

Here are five talking points from the first Wembley fixture of the 2023-24 season.

Vieira's redemption

Vieira's match-winning strike will give him a huge confidence boost going into the new season.

The versatile attacker struggled in his debut term at Arsenal after joining from Porto last summer.

But the Portuguese stepped up when the pressure was on to secure silverware for the Gunners, firing his penalty into the top corner.

It was a moment to savour for the youngster as he battles to nail down a regular spot in Mikel Arteta's XI.

Cole's corker

After helping England win the European Under-21 Championship this summer, Palmer enjoyed his biggest moment in a City shirt to date at Wembley.

The 21-year-old entered the fray in the second half and scored an absolute beauty, bending one into the top corner of Aaron Ramsdale's net after cutting inside from the right.

It was a goal worthy of former City winger Riyad Mahrez, who recently joined Saudi side Al-Ahli.

Palmer looks a ready-made replacement for the Algerian and could therefore save the Citizens from having to spend big in the transfer market.

Yellow card fever

If the Community Shield is anything to go by, the number of yellow cards in the Premier League this season is going to significantly increase from previous editions.

Stricter rules have been put in place by the FA including one which means players will be punished every time they kick the ball away after a foul.

Both Thomas Partey and Julian Alvarez fell victim to the change in the first half at Wembley and were cautioned by referee Stuart Atwell.

Arsenal boss Arteta also went into the official's book after he gestured for a yellow card following a foul by Rodri.

Robot needs a reboot

Erling Haaland has now gone six competitive games in a City shirt without scoring, which is a significant drought by his lofty standards.

Last season's Premier League Golden Boot winner was anonymous for the most part at Wembley, mainly due to the defensive class of William Saliba.

Haaland had just 13 touches of the ball and did not have a single shot on goal, nor did he complete a take-on. 

The Norwegian striker's ineffective display saw him replaced by Palmer on 64 minutes.

Havertz the No9

Kai Havertz deputised as Arsenal's No9 in the absence of the injured Gabriel Jesus and there were some positive signs from the Germany international.

The former Chelsea man led the line well and his relentless pressing caused issues for City's back-line, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.

Havertz also showed off his ability to hold the ball up with his 6ft 4in frame, which is a clear edge he has over Eddie Nketiah and Trossard.

The 24-year-old should have put away one of his two chances in the first half, though, with Stefan Ortega denying him on both occasions.
