Liverpool to win

Sunday’s marquee fixture in the Premier League pits two title hopefuls against one another as an almost unstoppable Liverpool head to the Emirates to face Arsenal.

The Gunners were stunned by Bournemouth last weekend and, while they bounced back in midweek, they are dealing with a host of selection issues at the moment.

Team news

Arsenal have an array of injury problems to contend with, with Martin Odegaard the most high-profile of three confirmed absentees through injury.

Full-back duo Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney join him on the sidelines, while Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori, and Jurriën Timber are all doubts and William Saliba is suspended after his red card last weekend.

Liverpool have some key absentees of their own, with Arne Slot without his first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, and Conor Bradley, while Diogo Jota is also ruled out.

Mikel Arteta has a number of selection headaches going into a crucial clash at the Emirates.

The stats

Liverpool have won 11 of their 12 competitive games this season.

Arsenal have only won two of their last 13 competitive meetings with Liverpool and may have as many as seven players missing through injury or suspension.

The Gunners have failed to win four of their last 10 fixtures, while the Reds have won all six competitive away games this season.

Prediction

Arsenal bounced back from their shock defeat at the Vitality Stadium last weekend with a midweek win over Shakhtar Donetsk, but even that was an unconvincing victory and they face much sterner opposition when Liverpool come to town on Sunday.

The Gunners, who are without Saliba and Martin and may be missing Saka, know that this is a crucial tie in the race for the Premier League title, but they have failed to win four of their last 10 games in all competitions and now come up against one of the form sides in Europe.

Liverpool won 1-0 in Leipzig in midweek to make it 11 victories in 12 attempts this season, with their sole failure being a shock defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.

This run includes victories over Chelsea, AC Milan, and Manchester United, while they have won all six competitive away games by an aggregate scoreline of 12-2.

Arsenal won the corresponding fixture last season, but that was just their second win over Liverpool in their last 12 meetings and Slot’s Reds can take advantage of their hosts’ selection woes to take a vital three points on Sunday.
