Gateshead were denied a first Vanarama National League victory under new boss Carl Magnay as Altrincham forced a 2-2 draw at Moss Lane.

Hosts Alty, seeking a third win in four after defeat at Braintree last time out, took the lead in the 20th minute as Tom Crawford sent the goalkeeper the wrong way when a penalty was awarded for handball.

The Heed pushed back hard though and were level when Barnsley academy product Jacob Butterfield fired home not long after the half-hour mark. Owen Oseni then completed the first-half turnaround with a close-range finish in the 40th minute.

Former Rushall Olympic hotshot Oseni twice came close to scoring a game-killing third for Gateshead after the break, but instead Alty grabbed a share of the points when Alex Newby hammered home from six yards out with four minutes left.
