Alfie May brace helps Birmingham go top of League One with Wigan win

Two goals from Alfie May helped Birmingham move top of Sky Bet League One after a 3-0 victory at Wigan.

May struck twice in the opening 30 minutes and Willum Willumsson added a third just after the hour mark as Birmingham moved two points clear of Wycombe, who were held at home by Blackpool on Saturday.

The Latics, looking to bounce back from their last-gasp defeat at Wrexham, almost took the lead inside three minutes when Jonny Smith’s shot took a big deflection before Ryan Allsop readjusted and saved with his feet.

Another stinging strike from Smith then saw the Blues goalkeeper save at full stretch, before Birmingham settled into the game and took the lead with their first attack.

The home side were unable to clear a corner, and May stabbed home from close range in the 18th minute.

Despite manager Chris Davies picking up a yellow card from the official – presumably for something he said – Birmingham doubled their lead on the half-hour.

Paik Seung-ho released Ethan Laird down the right, and his cross was steered home by May.

Michael Olakigbe struck the post for Wigan within seconds of the game restarting as the hosts almost hit back immediately, but that was as good as it got for them.

Willumsson wasted a gilt-edged opportunity to make it 3-0 at the beginning of the second half when he wanted far too much time, but he did get his goal in the 61st mintue at the end of a lovely passing move.
