The 70th BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 19.

An independent expert panel have decided upon a shortlist of sportspeople that have captured the imagination of UK fans over the previous 12 months. 

The public now get to vote for their winner of the main prize, who will be crowned in a ceremony that will be broadcast live on the BBC from 7pm.

Who is nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year award?

This year's nominees are:

Stuart Broad: Retired England cricketer who bowed out following this summer's Ashes.

Frankie Dettori: Famed flat-racing jockey who won the 2000 Guineas and the Oaks in his final season in the UK.

Mary Earps: England and Manchester United goalkeeper who reached the Women's World Cup final this summer.

Alfie Hewett: Won the Australian Open and US Open in wheelchair tennis singles along with doubles titles at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson: Won second world heptathlon title in Budapest this year.

Rory McIlroy: Won four of five matches to help Team Europe reclaim the Ryder Cup.

Who will win Sports Personality of the Year 2023?

The current favourite to be named as the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year is England goalkeeper Earps.

The 30-year-old saved a penalty in the Lionesses' World Cup final defeat to Spain.

Close to Earps in the betting is England cricketer Broad.

This follows his performances in the 2-2 Ashes series draw against Australia, which saw him break the 600 total Test wickets mark and help England to victory in his final appearance before retiring.

Where is the Sports Personality of the Year ceremony?

The 2023 Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford. 

It will be the fourth successive occasion that the event has been held in this location. 

This followed a number of years in which SPOTY ceremonies were hosted at major indoor arenas within the UK.

In 2022, the Sports Personality of the Year award was won by Arsenal and England footballer Beth Mead. 

The forward was the first female footballer to have ever won the accolade, after inspiring the Lionesses to their Euro 2022 triumph with six goals and five assists. 

Cricketer Ben Stokes was the runner-up, with Olympic gold medallist curler Eve Muirhead finishing third. 

Other prizes handed out included Usain Bolt being given the Lifetime Achievement Award, Lionel Messi being named World Sport Star and Sarina Wiegman crowned Coach of the Year.
