Emma Hayes was left frustrated after Women's Super League champions Chelsea drew 1-1 at Manchester City yesterday.

Chloe Kelly earned City an early lead after seven minutes but red cards shown to Alex Greenwood before half-time and Lauren Hemp with nine minutes to play gave the Blues the upper hand.

Despite their numerical advantage, only Guro Reiten's 96th-minute effort could salvage a point for Hayes' side.

She said: "City did everything we prepared for but we didn't execute.

"It's my job to create the structures and it is the players' jobs to carry out the decision-making and execution. I don't think our execution was our best, particularly in the final third.

"It took us too long to warm to the game. I thought we grew into it in the first half. Then the sending off alters the game and you have numerical superiority.

"We hit the bar twice and hit the post. I'm grateful for the equaliser after more laboured attacking play but it's a reminder that just because you have a numerical advantage doesn't mean you're going to win the game.

"You have to work for that, you work the spaces and I am disappointed by us on that front. 

"But in the grand scheme of things a point away from home, in the second game of the season, is a point gained and a missed opportunity all at once."

Flying Foxes

Leicester top the table after two matches of the season thanks to their 1-0 win at home to Everton.

The Toffees had the chance to break the deadlock in the first half but Justine Vanhaevermaet saw her penalty saved by Janina Leitzig.

Lena Petermann netted in the 69th minute to give the hosts their second win of the campaign following their opening-day victory at Bristol City.

Everton boss Brian Sorensen struggled to accept defeat, saying: "I have no idea how we lost that game. We should easily have scored three, four goals.

"We did everything right. We have one weak moment and they capitalise. It's tough but performance-wise we were much better than last week over 90 minutes.

"We played really good football and created the chances. We should never lose but we did.

"It's tough right now but we will look at the positives."

Rampant Reds

Matt Beard was happy to see Liverpool follow up their surprise 1-0 win at Arsenal with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Aston Villa.

Marie Hobinger struck in the 21st minute to give the hosts the lead before Natasha Flint tucked away the Reds' second after 77 minutes.

After weathering a number of attacks from their visitors, Beard knows there is room for improvement ahead of Sunday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Liverpool coach said: "All wins are important. We're just pleased we've managed to get another three points after last week's performance.

"We just want to improve on last year. I know that we've got a good group here.

"We have ambitions obviously to try to break into that top five. We've had a fantastic start but we've got to keep our feet on the ground."
