The relentless nature of the EFL does not subside and there is more Championship action this weekend with Watford hosting Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Hornets are on the cusp of the Championship playoff places but began 2025 with an underwhelming 3-1 defeat away to QPR on New Year's Day.

But they can take confidence from the fact that Sheffield United, although 12 points better off than Watford, also started the new year with a 2-1 loss away to Sunderland.

Both sides will be eager to return to winning ways when they clash at Vicarage Road but a close and cagey contest could be on the cards.

Team news

Tom Dele-Bashiru and Imran Louza remain sidelined for Watford, who could welcome back Edo Kayembe to the starting lineup this weekend.

Sheffield United are contending with a lengthy injury list. Harry Souttar, Oliver Arblaster, Femi Seriki, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Vinicius Souza, Jamie Shackleton and Tyrese Campbell are all set to miss out.

The stats

Tom Cleverley's Hornets have lost three of their last four.
Tom Cleverley's Hornets have lost three of their last four.

Neither of these sides are in great form with the Blades having won just three of their last seven games and Watford losing three of their last four assignments.

Sheffield United have already drawn six league fixtures this season, including a 1-1 stalemate with West Brom in their final match of 2024.

Goals have also been at a premium in games involving the Blades, who have seen under 2.5 goals in five of their last six fixtures.

Prediction

In the hunt for automatic promotion, Sheffield United have fared better than Watford this season, picking up 12 points more than their Hertfordshire counterparts.

But form is not on the side of the Blades and their lengthy injury list should level the playing field.

Chris Wilder is having to make do without a string of players including the likes of Harry Souttar, Oliver Arblaster and Jamie Shackleton and the absences have shown in recent performances.

The Blades have not won a game since before Christmas, failing to win any of their last three contests against Burnley, West Brom and Sunderland.

The quality of their recent opponents has at least been decent, though, whereas Watford have lost to bottom-half pair QPR and Cardiff in their last two league assignments.

But home form should also come into play in this contest and Watford have been a tough nut to crack at Vicarage Road, where they have lost just one league game this season and where 29 of their 37 league points have been collected.

All things considered it is hard to make a strong case for either of these sides and the draw looks overpriced given that Sheffield United have racked up six stalemates in the second tier this season.
