Brighton will have been delighted with the way they won their Europa League group in their debut season of continental competition, but life is about to get a bit tougher.

The Seagulls have been struggling on the road recently and they come up against a Roma side who have flourished under new manager Daniele De Rossi and who are tough to break down at the Stadio Olimpico.

Team news

The only issue for De Rossi is shuffling the pack to fill in at right-back as both Rasmus Kristensen and Rick Karsdrop are both ruled out. Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is missing with a long-term knee issue.

Brighton forward Joao Pedro is doubtful, but Billy Gilmour can play despite being suspended for domestic matches. However, James Milner, Jack Hinshelwood, Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma are all missing for the Seagulls.

The stats

Roma have lost one of their last nine matches and have scored at least three goals in four of their last seven outings.

Brighton have lost four of their last five away games, while six of Brighton’s last seven games on the road have featured at least three goals.

Both teams have scored in eight of Roma’s last 10 matches

Prediction

Brighton will have enjoyed their European adventure so far after topping a group that contained Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens, but some poor away form has been untimely for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

The first two months of 2024 were underwhelming as their only victories came against Sheffield United, who they beat twice, a Crystal Palace team who were struggling in the closing weeks of Roy Hodgson’s reign, and an FA Cup win over Championship Stoke.

That does not bode well for a trip to the Eternal City, where Roma have been storming up the Serie A table as they enjoy life under their former midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

They have lost just once under his guidance since he took over from the cautious Jose Mourinho, who took them to the final of this competition last season, and that defeat came against Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

The Wolves showed their mettle coming through a penalty shootout to see off Feyenoord in the playoffs and a forward line of Romelu Lukaku, Paulo Dybala and Stephan El Shaarawy are capable of causing plenty of problems.

Brighton were poor in a 3-0 loss at Fulham on Saturday and it would be a surprise if they made an immediate recovery and did not face a deficit when they head back to the south coast for the second leg.
