Norwich have sacked manager Daniel Farke just hours after beating Brentford to record their first Premier League win of the season.

The Canaries have endured a dreadful start to the campaign, losing eight of their first 10 league games, but were victorious in West London on Saturday afternoon.

That was not enough to save the German though, with the decision to remove him made by sporting director Stuart Webber prior to the game.

Farke's dismissal brings to an end his four-and-a-half year stint at Carrow Road, after achieving two promotions to the Premier League in Norfolk.

Despite his success in the Championship, he won just six of 49 top-flight matches in charge and had overseen a 20-game winless run at the highest level prior to victory at the Bees.

Sporting director Webber said: “In continuing to demand the very best for our football club, this decision was not an easy one.

“I know how determined Daniel and his staff were to succeed at this level, but we feel that now is the right time for a change to give ourselves the best opportunity of retaining our Premier League status.

“All at Norwich City should be forever grateful to Daniel and his staff for the significant role they have played in our journey.

“Daniel and his staff will always be welcome back here. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and wish them well for the future."

A club statement added: "The club will issue a further update on its first team staff in due course."

Farke had given no indication that he knew he was about to lose his job in his post-game media duties.

After celebrating a victory with the travelling Canaries for the first time since pre-pandemic, he was bullish about the chances of securing Premier League safety.

Farke said: "We definitely have a chance [of survival].

"It's a long marathon. The longer we work together, the better we will be as a team.

"I can't guarantee we'll stay in the league but don't write us off."

Norwich's next game is at home to Southampton on November 20 and they are expected to have announced a new boss by the time that kicks off.
