Manchester City are favourites to win their second Champions League crown this season and their opening fixture pits them against Inter Milan — the team they beat in the 2022-23 final.

The Citizens, chasing a seventh Premier League title in eight seasons, have made a blistering start to the campaign with star striker Erling Haaland scoring nine goals in four matches.

But Inter cruised to the Serie A title last season and will be eager to avenge their defeat in the 2023 final when City's midfield star Rodri scored the only goal of the game.

Team news

Manchester City are missing the injured Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb but Rodri is in line to make his first start of the campaign.

Inter Milan are likely to recall centre-back Alessandro Bastoni and midfielders Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu. Winger Tajon Buchanan is the visitors' only injury absentee.

The stats

Erling Haaland has scored nine goals in his first four Premier League appearances this season.

Both teams have scored in Manchester City's last seven home league wins.

The Citizens have won 12 of their last 13 home Champions League matches.

Four of Inter Milan's last six Serie A games have ended in draws.

There have been under 2.5 goals in 13 of Inter's last 16 Champions League games.

Both teams have scored in six of Inter's last eight away matches in all competitions.

Prediction

Manchester City have a formidable home record in the Champions League, winning 15 of their 17 matches over the past three seasons.

The exceptions were a 0-0 draw with Sporting in March 2022, after City had won the away leg 5-0, and last season's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the quarter-final second leg.

City had 33 shots in 120 minutes that night before suffering a frustrating penalty-shootout defeat and they are likely to pepper Inter Milan's goal on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's men have won their last six home league matches by 4-1, 5-1, 5-1, 3-1, 4-1 and 2-1 scorelines so Inter should be confident of getting on the scoresheet.

Ipswich and Brentford, this season's visitors to the Etihad Stadium, both took shock early leads and a 3-1 City win appeals in the correct-score betting.

Inter thumped Atalanta 4-0 in their last home game in Serie A but they have been held to score draws at Genoa and Monza this term and their defence may struggle to keep the in-form Haaland quiet.
