Pedro Porro is flying under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

The Spaniard, who initially struggled for consistency after joining the club in January, looks revitalised in a more attack-minded team.

Porro was particularly impressive against Liverpool last weekend, providing the delivery that forced Joel Matip to score a late own-goal in Spurs' 2-1 victory.

Ahead of today's clash with Luton, we take a closer look at the right-back's performances this season.

Forward-thinking

Postecoglou has been clear about the importance of full-backs in his system, with Porro and Destiny Udogie asked to move into central areas and push forward regularly.

Speaking in August, he said: "If there's space there, forget that you're a full-back, you're a footballer, get in that space. It's up to us to make sure that we're covering the gaps that are left.

"I think once players realise that they have the freedom to be able to do that, it's still very structured, then they don't second guess themselves.

"They know that it doesn't matter if they're a full-back, if there's space there then they get into it.

"Both Pedro [Porro] and Destiny [Udogie], when they have the ball and they're running with it, they're really difficult to stop. It's an essential area and it makes it more effective."

Case for the defence

Porro has also played his part in Tottenham's improved defensive record so far this term.

Only two Spurs players — Udogie (22) and Yves Bissouma (25) — have made more tackles than the 24-year-old (19).

He also ranks highly for clearances completed (15) and possessions won in the defensive third of the pitch (16).

After a slow start in North London, the Spain international is quickly proving himself to be a complete full-back.

Running out of superlatives

Postecoglou was understandably impressed by Porro's display against Liverpool.

He said: "Pedro has been super. Obviously, with our full-backs, we're asking for a different type of role than they're used to, and both him and Destiny have opened up really well to it.

"They're trying to learn, trying to understand it. I think it suits Pedro in many respects because he's such a good footballer, technically, he's a very good footballer, but he's also a great athlete."

At the top table

Tottenham will hope things continue to go as smoothly as they have in the opening weeks of the season.

Postecoglou has created a uniquely positive atmosphere and is implementing a style that his players are enjoying.

Porro acknowledged as much in an interview last month.

He said: "I'm feeling really happy out there and I think you can see that when I'm playing."

If Spurs' No23 can help his side to a victory over Luton at Kenilworth Road, the North Londoners' efforts could be rewarded by ending the weekend at the top of the table.
