Maddison out injured

James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad with an ankle injury, less than 24 hours after being called up by Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions manager had sounded optimistic on Thursday about the midfielder's chances of being involved, following his substition in Tottenham's clash with Chelsea on Monday night.

Southgate said: "He seems positive. There's clearly an element of doubt."

But Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou explained on Friday: "He got quite a significant ankle injury the other night and was sent for scans.

"That wasn't great, so he'll be out for a period of time, probably into the New Year."

Maddison was taken off in added time at the end of the first half of the match against the Blues, which Spurs eventually lost 4-1.

Happy with Havertz

Mikel Arteta claims he is happy with the form of Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz.

The German has only scored one goal in 18 appearances since joining the Gunners in June.

Arteta said: "I can tell you that I'm really pleased with the way he's performing.

"Obviously, looking at the numbers, just specifically the numbers of what he's producing in front of goal, those have to be improved and we have to improve them.

"But in many other areas of the pitch, what he gives to the team at the moment is really important."

Arsenal host Burnley on Saturday, boosted by their 2-0 home victory over Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Trent can go with the flow

Jurgen Klopp admits he is considering a positional change for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England international has been used as an inverted full-back in recent months by the Liverpool boss, who has now stated that a move to a more defined midfield role could come.

Klopp said: "It is a possibility. It depends on the opponents and the situation and things like this but we know that he can play there.

"For us, if we just put him there then we lose one of the best right-backs in the world and we should not forget that completely."

Alexander-Arnold could replace the suspended Alexis Mac Allister for Sunday's match against Brentford.

Postecoglou completes hat-trick

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been named Premier League Manager of the Month for the third time in a row.

After the Australian won the awards for August and September, he completed a hat-trick having also been given the honour for October.

Spurs were the only top-flight side to win all three of their games last month, defeating Luton, Crystal Palace and Fulham.

Their unbeaten start to the season came to an end on Monday night when they lost 4-1 at home to Chelsea.

Having been defeated in their first match in November, the chances of Postecoglou winning the award for a fourth successive occasion were delivered a blow.

The only manager to have achieved that honour is Pep Guardiola during the 2017-18 season.

Southgate issues James warning

Gareth Southgate claims Reece James has put his Euro 2024 place at risk, having made himself unavailable for the upcoming international break.

The England manager was keen to include the Chelsea right-back in his latest squad, with the 23-year-old instead opting to continue his rehabilitation at his club, having only recently returned from injury.

Southgate said James, who has not played for the Three Lions since March, understands the competition he faces from the likes of Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He explained: "That's the risk. He's only got one more squad before the Euros.

"So he knows that. We've got belief in what he can do."

Following this international break, there will only be one more England camp in March 2024, prior to the European Championship next summer.

England midfielder Katie Zelem is part of a team behind a new app designed to bring aspiring footballers closer to their professional idols.

Ultrain Sports connects youth teams and individuals to pro players, featuring live Q&A sessions that give opportunities to quiz stars from some of the top leagues across the world.

Manchester United captain Zelem is the co-founder alongside actor Darrius Marcellin, with the latter having explained the purpose of an app that has Liverpool ace Curtis Jones among its investors.

He said: "Seeing the transformation young players are getting from having the opportunity to meet and ask questions to their soccer heroes is the sole purpose of our platform.

"The ability for a young player to ask what you eat before games, or how you dealt with a big mistake in a game, is having a life-changing effect on the lives of these players on and off the field."
