Lineker: Haaland signing is ‘seminal moment’

Gary Lineker has described Manchester City’s acquisition of Erling Haaland as a "seminal moment" for the Premier League.

Haaland will officially join the Citizens from Borussia Dortmund for £51.1million on July 1.

The Norwegian, 21, was courted by several of Europe’s biggest clubs but opted for a five-year deal with City — something ex-England forward Lineker believes displays the increased stature of English football's top flight.

Lineker tweeted: "The signing of Haaland to Manchester City is done. A seminal moment for the Premier League.

"The first time a young superstar, sought by all, has come to an English club over the Spanish giants — [Paul] Pogba being a few years older when he signed for Manchester United."

City’s domestic rivals Liverpool are expected to follow the news with a deal for Darwin Nunez.

Benfica confirmed this morning that an agreement has been reached for Nunez, 22, to join the Reds.

Grealish buoyed by new arrival

Jack Grealish cannot wait to link up with Erling Haaland next season — even if it means a tougher time nailing down a starting spot.

England winger Grealish, 26, made 22 starts for the Citizens in the Premier League last term after arriving from Aston Villa in a £100m deal.

Speaking at the McDonald's Fun Football summer launch, Grealish said: "Of course, it’s brilliant.

"We’ve just signed Erling Haaland. It’s good competition for players like myself because it helps to keep you on your toes. But it’s also brilliant because it just means you have got more chance of winning yourself.

"I love it and love to see the club making big signings."

Grealish is an ambassador for the McDonald's programme, which will offer one million kids access to free football over the next four years as part of the largest grassroots football programme in the UK.

He added: "It’s massively important to have football for everyone. And that’s why the McDonald’s sessions are so good. It’s not just male football that we need, we need everyone.

"To see the women and girls playing is brilliant. And, of course, footballers with disabilities too."

Blackburn close in on Tomasson

Blackburn are set to confirm Champions League winner Jon Dahl Tomasson as their new boss.

Ex-AC Milan striker Tomasson, who also enjoyed a season at Newcastle during his playing days, is expected to succeed Tony Mowbray following his departure from Ewood Park last month.

The Dane, 45, has just ended a two-year stint with Swedish outfit Malmo, where he guided them to back-to-back Allsvenskan titles.

Rovers finished eighth in the Championship last term, just six points shy of a play-off berth.

Chelsea extend Gilmour deal

Chelsea have handed Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour a two-year contract extension — keeping him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2024.

Gilmour, who turned 21 last weekend, spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at relegated Norwich, making 28 appearances in all competitions.

He has turned out 22 times for the Blues since making his debut in August 2019 but another loan spell could now be on the cards.

Duff leaving Cheltenham

Cheltenham have confirmed that boss Michael Duff is set to pursue a new opportunity amid intense speculation linking him to Barnsley.

Duff, 44, has been with the Robins since 2018 and led them to an unexpected promotion from League Two in 2020-21.

He will be tasked with guiding his new club straight back to the second tier after the Tykes finished rock bottom of the Championship last season.

Cheltenham chairman David Bloxham said: "Obviously it’s a disappointing day for Cheltenham as Michael has done such a tremendous job for us, but he leaves with our very best wishes for the future.

"Michael made it clear to us that it was a very difficult decision for him.

"We did all we could to try and keep him at the club but ultimately this new opportunity is one that he feels it right for him at this stage of his career."
