Spurs know their Destiny

Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie has signed a new deal which will keep him in North London until the summer of 2030.

The flying full-back, 21, has impressed under Ange Postecoglou having spent last season on loan with former club Udinese and earned a first senior Italy call-up in October.

He scored his first Spurs goal in Sunday's 4-1 rout of Newcastle and the North Londoners have moved quickly to tie down the young starlet.

Udogie said: "From the first day I came here, I felt at home. The players, the coaching staff and the club make me feel so welcome.

"I think we're building something big and just have to keep going forward together."

Smith heads Stateside

Former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is back in management after taking the reins at MLS outfit Charlotte FC.

The 52-year-old endured brief and ill-fated spells in charge of Norwich and Leicester last term but is feeling bullish about the next chapter in his coaching career.

Smith said: "I'm honoured to be appointed as the next head coach of Charlotte FC and cannot wait to start preparations for the 2024 season.

"Throughout the interview process, it was clear that this is an ambitious club with the right ingredients for success and I'm delighted to begin a new chapter in Charlotte.

"This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project with so much potential to take to new heights in Major League Soccer."

Smith's predecessor Christian Lattanzio led Charlotte to the MLS play-offs for the first time in their history last year but was sacked after a 5-2 defeat to New York Red Bulls in the first round.

Ref attack stuns Turkish football

Turkiye's professional football leagues have been suspended indefinitely after a leading referee was punched on the pitch by a club president.

Ankaragucu chief Faruk Koca struck match official Halil Umut Meler to the ground after seeing his side concede a 97th-minute equaliser in Monday's 1-1 Super Lig draw with Caykur Rizespor.

The incident provoked a mass brawl and left both Koca and Meler both needing hospital treatment, with the former having since been arrested.

Turkish FA chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi said: "The matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely.

"This attack is a night of shame for Turkish football."

FIFA have condemned the incident, labelling it "totally unacceptable", while Turkiye's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan also made his feelings clear.

Erdogan said: "Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence. We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports."

Milner's regret

James Milner has revealed Gareth Southgate attempted to coax him out of international retirement when first taking the England job.

The versatile Brighton star, who called time on his Three Lions career after Roy Hodgson's spell as boss, went on to became a key cog of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team for many years.

But speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Milner admitted he would have happily played under Southgate if timings had not conspired against him.

Milner said: "Southgate rang me and said, 'I want you back, I think you'd play a big part for us as a leader' and stuff like that.

"My feeling was that if he had been the next England manager six weeks before and he said what he said, I'd have definitely carried on, 100%.

"But at that point, I had retired and I feel like when you do something you fully commit to it 100% and I just thought, 'Well, how does it look me retiring, now I'm not retiring?'.

"Changing it on the wind of an opinion, I didn't want to do that."
