All eyes were on Manchester City against Liverpool ahead of the Premier League weekend — but most of the drama unfolded elsewhere!

I've picked out five stars from an entertaining Matchday 13 in the top flight.

Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)

It is not the first time Anthony Gordon has featured in my list this season and his afternoon's work against Chelsea at St James' Park makes him a worthy member once again.

The Newcastle winger is having his best Premier League season to date, picking up another goal and assist in a rampant 4-1 win.

It looked like a difficult task up against Reece James on the left flank but the Magpies forward tormented him throughout, forcing the Blues skipper into a sending off for a second yellow card.

Given the job James did on Jeremy Doku in his previous game, it shows just how good a season Gordon is having on Tyneside.

Joao Pedro (Brighton)

Joao Pedro once again showcased what an exceptional player he is with two goals as Brighton ended a six-game winless run by beating Nottingham Forest.

I think there were still a few question marks over him when the Seagulls picked him up in the summer given he had struggled to make an impact with Watford in the Premier League.

But I've been really impressed with him so far this season. He reminds me a bit of fellow Brazilian Gabriel Jesus with his flair and technical ability.

His brilliant header for his first shows the variety of ways in which he can score too — which is always a sign of a top striker.

Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth)

Bournemouth picked up a precious three points against relegation rivals Sheffield United largely thanks to Marcus Tavernier's display.

The Cherries winger scored his first two goals of the season in the 3-1 win and could prove a crucial player for Andoni Iraola as the campaign progresses.

It is always harder to find that consistency when you're playing for a team towards the bottom and moving seven points clear of the relegation zone will do wonders for the confidence of the whole group.

A special shoutout too for Justin Kluivert, who became just the second player this century to score in all five of Europe's top leagues — Bournemouth are certainly not short of attacking talent in their battle against the drop.

Pau Torres (Aston Villa)

I thought Pau Torres was outstanding in Aston Villa's brilliant win at Tottenham which saw them move into the top four.

There was a lot of hype when Unai Emery managed to convince the left-sided defender to join him at Villa Park and he showed his composure and class in what was a difficult game in North London.

The Spaniard's passing was on point, as we've come to expect from him, but he also dealt well with Spurs' variety of attacking threats — not to mention his super header to draw Villa level.

Torres has probably played more games than he expected due to Tyrone Mings' injury but after some shaky moments early on, he has looked right at home in the Premier League.

Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United)

Alejandro Garnacho's outstanding overhead kick in a 3-0 win over Everton makes him an automatic pick in my five stars.

The Manchester United forward's overall performance certainly wasn't poor but to produce a moment like that warrants a man-of-the-match award on its own.

It's not really a skill you can practice, those sorts of goals happen when the cross is behind you and you have to adjust your body.

I've seen some comparisons with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale's overhead kick stunners and you could argue it is as good as all of those on a technical level.

The magnitude of the games those others were scored in means I place it just behind — but that should not take anything away from the strike.
