Colombia or Draw double chance

Group D at the Copa America draws to a close on Wednesday, with Colombia and Brazil going head-to-head for top spot.

Los Cafeteros are currently at the summit after winning both of their matches while the Selecao are two points behind in second having drawn their opening game.

Each will be eager to claim top spot and avoid an in-form Uruguay in the quarter-finals, but it is the current leaders Colombia who look likeliest to land the section.

Team news

Brazil may name an unchanged XI after a 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay last time out, although Wendell, Vincius Junior, Lucas Paqueta and Eder Militao are all one yellow card away from a ban and therefore might see their minutes limited.

Jefferson Lerma, Jhon Cordoba and Richard Rios are Colombia’s suspension tightrope-walkers and there were concerns about James Rodriguez after his early withdrawal against Costa Rica, but that has since been confirmed to have been a precautionary move.

The stats

Colombia are on a 25-match unbeaten run which includes 23 wins.

Brazil have won just two of their last six meetings with Los Cafeteros.

Both teams to score has been a winning bet in three of Colombia’s last five games.

The Selecao have won only three of their last 10 games.

Each of Colombia’s last five matches have gone over 2.5 goals.

Vinicius Junior scored twice in Brazil’s last game.

Prediction

Brazil need a win to claim top spot in Group D, but based on Colombia’s form three points will be hard to come by in California.

Los Cafeteros’ two group-stage wins saw them extend their unbeaten run to a sensational 25 games, with Nestor Lorenzo’s side recording an impressive 23 wins in that streak.

Amongst those wins were successes over arguably the two best sides at Euro 2024 so far, Germany and Spain, as well as a 2-1 victory over Brazil, suggesting Los Cafeteros could wrap up a perfect group stage on Wednesday.

The Selecao were much improved in their 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay last time out, but their 0-0 draw with Costa Rica highlighted their inconsistency in front of goal and their overall form is not great either, having won just three of their last 10 matches.

They have lost just one of their last six meetings with Colombia, though, and Dorival Junior has world-class players such as Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo at his disposal, so they may be strong enough to earn a point in California, bringing the double chance into play as three of those recent clashes have ended level.
