Newcastle are drawing up a shortlist of midfield targets for January as Eddie Howe prepares to reinforce his squad.

The Magpies have made a strong start to the campaign and want to compete in the latter stages of the Champions League, as well as in the Premier League.

And with summer recruit Sandro Tonali expected to be handed a lengthy ban for gambling offences in the coming days, midfield is a priority position.

The I report that Howe could reignite his interest in Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips if they decide to bring in short-term cover for Tonali.

Phillips is desperate for first-team football as he aims to keep his place in England's starting XI ahead of Euro 2024.

But The Athletic report that several other domestic options are also on the Magpies' wish list.

Scott McTominay of Manchester United, Everton enforcer Amadou Onana and Fulham ace Joao Palhinha are said to be options.

Onana is thought to be the most attainable of the three, with the Toffees needing to sell as they battle financial difficulties.

Newcastle have won six and drawn two of their last eight matches in all competitions and take on Borussia Dortmund this evening.
