West Ham became the first visiting side to win at Goodison Park this season thanks to Angelo Ogbonna’s glancing second-half header.

It was the first time the Hammers have won consecutive away games at the Toffees since March 1930 and was a result that pleased former Everton boss of 11 years, David Moyes.

He said: "[It was a] good performance, a difficult place to come as I know.

"[The goal] was one which we needed because we had been knocking at the door in different ways so we needed that to get over the line.

"I think overall we deserved it because of the way we played, we played some really good stuff.

“We had a lot of the ball, maybe just in the final third we could have been a bit cleaner.”

The first 45 minutes were tightly contested, but the first clear-cut opportunity fell to Alex Iwobi who wasted a good chance from close range after Abdoulaye Doucoure’s cross in the 22nd minute.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead on 34 minutes after Jordan Pickford’s save from Jarrod Bowen’s low shot fell straight to Tomas Soucek, but his effort was flagged offside.

Following the restart, Salomon Rondon headed narrowly wide of Lukasz Fabianksi’s goal before Pablo Fornals’ curling effort at the other end had a similar fate.

However, the travelling supporters would have something to celebrate in the 74th minute after Bowen swung in a corner that Italian centre-back Ogbonna managed to get the slightest of touches on to break the deficit.

The result lifts Moyes’ men to 14 points, leapfrogging Everton in the table.

Did you know?

The Toffees suffered their eighth home league defeat of 2021, only losing more in 1993 (10) and 2005 (9).

The Hammers are undefeated in their last seven away league games (W5 D2), their longest run without defeat on the road in the top flight since January 2009.

Moyes’ side have earned 10 points from four away league games this season (W3 D1 L0) which, when adjusting to three points for a win all-time, is their joint-most from their opening four away matches to a Football League/Premier League campaign (also 10 in 1956-57, 2011-12 and 2015-16).

Since the former Everton boss took charge of a second time at the London Stadium, the Hammers have scored more goals from set-piece situations in the Premier League (29, excluding penalties) than any other side.

All eight of Ogbonna's Premier League goals have come from set-pieces, including seven from corners (one free-kick).
