Southampton have lost their first three matches on their return to the Premier League so they will be desperate to pick up at least a point against Manchester United on Saturday.

After defeats to Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Brentford, Saints face a United side who were thumped 3-0 by Liverpool at Old Trafford before the international break.

That result increased the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, whose squad remains depleted by injuries, and United have won only one of their last seven away matches in the top flight.

Team news

Bruno Fernandes should be fit to face Southampton

Southampton are expected to be missing injured goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and striker Ross Stewart. Kamaldeen Sulemana (ankle) faces a fitness test.

Publicidad

United's Bruno Fernandes suffered a knock in Portugal's Nations League win over Scotland but should be fit to start.

However, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof remain sidelined for the Red Devils.

The stats

Southampton have lost two of their first three Premier League games by a 1-0 scoreline.

Saints' only league goal this season was scored in the 95th minute.

Southampton's home fixtures in last season's Championship averaged 3.61 goals per game.

Publicidad

United have won only one of their last seven Premier League away fixtures.

The Red Devils have been losing at half-time and full-time in four of their last seven league matches.

Both teams have scored in only two of United's last seven league games.

Prediction

United's last away fixture in the Premier League ended in a dramatic 2-1 defeat at Brighton and they will be hoping for a better result when they return to the south coast on Saturday.

The Red Devils conceded a 95th-minute goal against the Seagulls before being outclassed by rivals Liverpool in a chastening 3-0 home defeat.

Southampton, last season's Championship play-off winners, have also had a tough start to the campaign, losing 1-0 to 10-man Newcastle before a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest and a 3-1 loss at Brentford last time out.

Russell Martin's men were free-scoring at home in the second division but their forwards are struggling with the step up and under 2.5 goals looks a good bet against United.

Southampton failed to find the net at St James' Park despite a 28th-minute red card for Newcastle defender Fabian Schar and, worryingly, they mustered only one shot on target at home to Forest.

The Red Devils are also lacking attacking fluency. They beat Fulham 1-0 in their opening game and their loss to Liverpool featured only six shots on target so they may struggle to turn on the style at St Mary's.
