Russell sets September target

Jockey Davy Russell is hopeful he can return to the saddle in September, after ruling out a competitive comeback at the Galway Festival.

The 42-year-old rider has been out of action since dislocating and fracturing vertebrae in a fall aboard Doctor Duffy in the Munster National at Limerick in October.

Initial plans were for the Cheltenham Gold and Grand National-winning jockey to return in time for the Prestbury Park event back in March.

But he decided to swerve that event while also opting to miss the Punchestown meeting in April.

Reports had suggested Russell could be back in time for the Galway Festival, yet he dismissed these claims and has instead set out a potential September return date.

Quoted by theirishfield.ie, he said: "I'm coming along good. I've no real date as such yet. It'll happen in September hopefully at some stage, but that wouldn't be definite.

"I'm getting plenty of physio twice a week and I've loads of exercises and things to do, so I'm getting stronger every day. Galway will be too soon, I'd say. Fingers crossed for September."

Fahey considers increased trip for Fev

Richard Fahey is contemplating a step up in trip for Qipco 1000 Guineas third Fev Rover, who suffered a sinus problem since her last run but is now expected to take on 10 furlongs in her next outing.

The three-year-old has struggled on her last two runs, ending up 10th in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh before finishing a disappointing sixth at Royal Ascot in the Coronation Stakes.

However, Fahey is not giving up on his charge just yet.

He said: "I might just step her up in trip. She wants fast ground. I know she's won on soft, but every time I enter it rains. The only time we've run her on decent ground was in the Guineas when she ran a blinder.

"We'll get her back, she's not finished yet. I've got her in the Nassau, but I'd say that will be a warm race, the Falmouth was a warm race, too."

Oxted to get a full check

Oxted to get the once over

Roger Teal has confirmed Oxted will be "checked out" after finishing third when defending his Darley July Cup crown at Newmarket on Saturday.

Having produced a superb performance to win the King's Stand at Royal Ascot, the five-year-old could only manage third at HQ last weekend and was then found to be suffering from mild heat stress post-race.

Ensuring his charge is in good health, Teal will be getting Oxted looked over.

He said; "He seems absolutely fine, but we're going to have him checked out because we don't know why he hung across the track. We'll have the vet look at him and see if there's anything untoward.

"He got a little bit hot after the race. It was a stifling day and we had to get some cold water on him afterwards as his body was a bit over-heated. There were a couple in the race the same afterwards."

French option for Rohaan

Trainer David Evans has suggested Rohaan could head to Deauville next after finishing a disappointing 10th of 19 at Newmarket on Saturday in the Darley July Cup.

This was Rohaan's first shot at Group One level, having claimed previous success at Group Two and Three, but it was not to be as he ended up four and three-quarter lengths behind Starman.

Speaking about the next options, Evans is considering a trip to Deauville on August 8.

He said: "He could go for the Maurice de Gheest. There might not be so many runners and not as good a field as in the July Cup. That was probably the best sprint race of the season."
