Leeds legend Peter Lorimer has died aged 74 after a long-term illness.

The attacking midfielder, who was a key member of Don Revie’s dominant Leeds side of the 60s and 70s, played at Elland Road from 1962-79 and 1983-85.

He made his debut for the Yorkshire club against Southampton in 1962 at the age of 15 years and 289 days — and went on to become their all-time leading scorer with 238 goals.

Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear said: "Today is an incredibly sad day. Peter Lorimer epitomised the word legend.

"Not only was he our record goalscorer from a decorated era of our history but he continued to work closely with the club until it was no longer possible in recent months.

"Our thoughts are with [his wife] Sue and all his family. He will be missed greatly."

European heartache

Lorimer, who scored four times in 21 appearances for Scotland, had a goal ruled out as Leeds lost the European Cup final to Bayern Munich in 1975.

"He will always remain a club icon and his legacy at Elland Road will live on.

"Our thoughts are naturally with Peter's wife Sue and the rest of his family at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Peter."

Lorimer left Leeds in 1979 for spells with Toronto Blizzard, Vancouver Whitecaps and York City before returning to Elland Road in 1983 at the age of 37, when the club were in what was then the Second Division.

Upon hearing the news of Lorimer's death, Leeds midfielder Stuart Dallas admitted the joy of last night's 2-1 victory at Fulham had quickly been forgotten.

He said: "After the high of last night, we learn of such sad news this morning. My thoughts are with Peter's family and friends at this difficult time."
