The Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix has been cancelled.

Following on from UEFA stripping Russia of hosting the Champions League final in May, the FIA have made it clear there is no way a prestigious motorsport event can take place there in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.

An official statement said: "The FIA Formula 1 world championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together.

"We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation.

"On Thursday evening, Formula 1, the FIA and the teams discussed the position of our sport and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances."

The Russian GP was due to take place at the Sochi Autodrom on September 25.

Speaking yesterday, four-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel vowed he would not compete if the race went ahead.

The German, 34, said: "I should not go, I will not go. It is wrong to race in the country.

"I am sorry for the innocent people who are being killed for stupid reasons and a very strange and mad leadership."

Vettel's views were echoed by reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who added: "When a country is at war it is not right to race there."
