Wilson going nowhere

Newcastle have confirmed striker Callum Wilson has signed a one-year contract extension.

England international Wilson, 31, agreed new terms that will keep him at St James' Park until the summer of 2025 having been the Magpies' top scorer for the past three seasons.

Wilson said: "When I first joined the club, I had ambitions to come back to the Premier League having been relegated with Bournemouth.

"Over the first few interviews, I mentioned [playing in] Europe and I mentioned getting to 100 Premier League goals. They were ambitions of mine and they still are.

"I'm close to getting into the 100 club and also becoming the second all-time Premier League scorer for Newcastle would be an amazing achievement, having looked up to Alan Shearer for many years."

Having netted 40 goals in 79 Premier League appearances for the Toon so far, eight more strikes will see Wilson leapfrog Peter Beardsley into second place in that illustrious list.

No impact

Sean Dyche insists Everton's takeover will not have any impact on the performance of him or his players.

It was announced earlier today that American investment group 777 Partners have agreed a deal to buy Farhad Moshirt's 94% controlling stake in the club, subject to Premier League approval and checks.

The Toffees host Arsenal on Sunday afternoon — a fixture they have remarkably won in the last three seasons — and Dyche is not anticipating any backlash from off-field matters.

He said: "There's no impact on me or the players other than the news. As the manager I was aware something maybe happening.

"I know there are ongoing checks from the Premier League and the like so that will take some time. The noise has been there for a long time, so I think people have got used to it. 

"Probably since before I was here there has been noise about everything. Ever since I've been here, there have not been many press conferences I've done which have been purely about football."

Raging Rob

Rob Edwards has hit back at Garth Crooks after the pundit claimed he "cannot take Luton seriously".

The Hatters have lost their opening three Premier League games after securing an unlikely promotion to the top flight last season, leading Crooks to declare in his BBC column that they would be "down by Christmas".

But those comments have irked Edwards, 40, who has invited Crooks down to Kenilworth Road to take a closer look at their operation.

Edwards said: "I think after three games it is disrespectful. It does hurt when you hear comments like that. When people tell you that, it's hard to shy away from it.

"At this level in the Premier League, you're going to be shot at, people are going to have their opinions and I suppose that's what he's paid to do but I think it was a disrespectful comment.

"We have reached out to Mr Crooks so he can come in and we can show him what we do with our plan and that we're not a team to be laughed at.

"Our job is to get good results and performances and to change people's minds."

United's shopping spree

Manchester United dominated the headlines on the Women's Super League transfer deadline day with the signings of Gabby George, Irene Guerrero and Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Defender George, 26, returns to United for a fee of £150,000 after a decade with Everton having come through the Red Devils' academy as a youngster.

She said: "As a massive Manchester United fan, I'm buzzing to be here. It's the club I've supported since I was born and I'm delighted to come back.

"This club means a lot to me and my family, and it's where we want to be."

Mac your mark

Paul Heckingbottom has challenged Manchester City loanee James McAtee to strut his stuff on the Premier League stage.

McAtee, 20, linked up with the Blades for a second straight season on deadline day having notched nine goals in their Championship promotion-winning campaign.

But Heckingbottom wants more from the youngster in his second Bramall Lane stint.

He said: "If he was that player that a lot of our people probably think he is, he wouldn't be here. He'd be playing for Man City.

"What he is is a big talent and I think he's a little bit different to what we've got.

"He also gets where he's going to get pushed and it probably is a little bit scary. 

"He probably thinks I'm telling him he's not a good player but he's still a young lad and for me, he can improve in so many different areas."

United draw PSG

Manchester United have been drawn to face Paris Saint-Germain in their Women's Champions League qualifying tie.

United, who are making their debut in the competition, will have to overcome last season's quarter-finalists if they are to secure a spot in the 16-team group stage. 

The 12 ties will be played over two legs on October 10/11 and 18/19 with the quartet of Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea already through.
