He's the Ron

Roberto Martinez is convinced Cristiano Ronaldo's experience will be pivotal to Portugal's bid for Euro 2024 glory.

The Selecao have already booked their spot at next summer's finals having won all eight of their qualifiers to date, including a 5-0 away thrashing of Bosnia and Herzegovina last night.

Al-Nassr forward Ronaldo netted the first two goals of the contest, with Martinez stressing the 38-year-old's importance in his post-match news conference.

The Spanish boss said: "Cristiano Ronaldo has maximum experience and we need to use that.

"We are very clear about what we need to do to get the best out of each player for the team.

"The clarity we had allowed us to play as a team and individual quality comes much easier then. I really liked it."

Blues brothers

Noni Madueke is in a rich vein of form for England Under-21s

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke reckons Blues icon Ashley Cole is helping him take his game to the next level.

Cole is part of Lee Carsley's England Under-21s coaching team and has been working closely with 21-year-old Madueke, who followed up his brace against Serbia last week with another goal against Ukraine last night.

Opening up on the former full-back's influence, Madueke said: "Ash takes a very personal approach with bettering my game.

"I'm extremely good in one-on-one situations but I could probably score and assist more, so he's on me with that type of stuff.

"I got two good finishes against Serbia — one more like the goals I usually score and one one-touch finish, so I'm proud.

"I've got a lot of belief in my ability. I think I've got it in me."

Not Con-vinced

Conor Coady has questioned fans who booed Jordan Henderson last week

Conor Coady has questioned the logic of England supporters booing Jordan Henderson.

The 30-year-old defender was part of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 and 2022 World Cup squads alongside Henderson, who has faced widespread criticism for a summer move to the Saudi Pro League.

While Coady accepts opinions will vary on his colleague's career choices, he is not convinced about supporters making their voices heard in the stands.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live's Monday Night Club, Coady said: "Everyone's got an opinion on Jordan Henderson. We've seen that over the last few months.

"I've seen it first-hand from sharing a dressing room with him, what he brings to the team, what he brings off the pitch and how he drives players.

"We're talking about our England team — the team we want to see do well. I just hope in the near future this team can lift a trophy and it's not helping anybody booing our own players."

Back to work

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz saw his goal against Tottenham wrongly ruled out by VAR

Darren England and Daniel Cook will return to Premier League duty this weekend for the first time since their high-profile error in last month's Tottenham and Liverpool clash.

Officials England and Cook were both on VAR duty when the Reds saw a Luis Diaz goal ruled out incorrectly for offside — a game Spurs went on to win 2-1.

After initially being stood down for the following week's games, both are now set to return to action away from the VAR room.

England will be fourth official for Brentford's home game with Burnley, while Cook will be running the line as Sheffield United take on Manchester United at Bramall Lane.

Get your Phil

Philippe Clement is confident he can turn things around at Rangers

Philippe Clement has vowed to make his new club Rangers the dominant force in Scottish football once again.

Belgian tactician Clement, 49, was confirmed as Michael Beale's replacement at Ibrox last Sunday and was most recently in charge of Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

He takes over a Gers side trailing their bitter rivals Celtic by seven points in the Scottish Premiership but is confident of bridging the gap between the two Glasgow giants over the coming months.

Clement said: "I want to win everything. My objectives are always to win. I want this mentality for the dressing room and to create more winners.

"We will work really hard to win silverware as quickly as possible. I don't have a crystal ball and I'm not a magician with a wand but I know we can make the players better.

"I want to create the best technical, tactical, physical and mental team in the league over the next couple of months. If you do that, results will follow."

Overdue win

Pakistan won their first game of football in five years to reach the second round of Asian World Cup qualifying for the first time ever.

Harun Hamid's second-half strike was enough to secure a historic 1-0 triumph over Cambodia, sparking jubilant scenes of celebration in Islamabad's Jinnah Sports Stadium.

The victory marked the perfect start for English boss Stephen Constantine, who only took up his new role last month.
