Boro’s famous night

Stevenage match-winner Dean Campbell was delighted to be the unlikely hero who secured a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round.

Sent on as a substitute with less than half an hour to go, the 21-year-old was fouled for Boro’s late penalty equaliser before smashing home the winner in stoppage time at Villa Park.

It was only the youngster’s second senior goal and his first for the League Two side as he celebrated the upset in front of 3,000 jubilant away fans.

Campbell said: "It's an incredible feeling personally, but for the whole squad as well.

"We won a corner and I was kind of at the edge of the box. I heard the gaffer screaming, as he does, 'Go get the ball' — and when I got the ball I took a good touch, saw I had space and just thought I'd have a go, focus on my technique, get it on target and it just snuck in at the front post.

"It was a good strike. I knew there were a lot of bodies in the way so I had to keep it down, I got a good connection and I saw it go in — it was just elation after that.

"First thing I thought was, 'Get the knee slide right', which was my first one in football and I think I managed to do all right with that.

"The noise from the brilliant travelling fans was incredible and the celebrations at the end were exceptional."

Running up that Gil

Bryan Gil has impressed during a rare chance in the Tottenham first team

Bryan Gil has vowed to repay the faith shown in him by Antonio Conte after impressing during a rare run in Tottenham's starting XI.

Gil, 21, has found opportunities hard to come by for much of his time in North London but injuries have meant he has started Spurs’ last three games in all competitions.

The Spanish winger put in a strong performance in their 4-0 win at Crystal Palace last Wednesday, before catching the eye again in the FA Cup victory over Portsmouth.

His displays have seen Conte recently compare his No11 to Manchester City's Bernardo Silva.

Gil said: "I’m getting more opportunities now, he is giving me minutes and I have to repay his faith. I have to show he can trust me when I get those chances and show that I can play well.

"I don’t read much of the press but if he said that [about Bernardo Silva] then, well he’s a fantastic player, one of my favourites and he’s on a different level so I suppose I have to say thanks!"

Conte's men face a North London derby against Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday and Gil is primed to play another key role with injured Dejan Kulusevski still on the road to recovery.

On the prospect of facing the Gunners, Gil said: "This is a great fixture and Arsenal are having an incredible season.

"In the Premier League we got a good result against Palace last week and I think we’re in a good place to think we can win."

Chalobah: Blues slump is on us

Trevoh Chalobah was unable to prevent Chelsea losing 4-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup third round

Trevoh Chalobah called for togetherness after Chelsea were dumped out of the FA Cup with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The Blues conceded three goals during a miserable 15-minute spell in the first half to compound them to their heaviest defeat of the season.

Chalobah, who was making his first start since the World Cup, said of the performance: "As a team collectively we didn’t put enough pressure on them.

"They had a lot of time on the ball, a lot of space. Conceding three goals against any team is not good, and that was game done really. It was difficult."

The result piles more pressure on Chelsea boss Graham Potter after losing six of his last nine games in all competitions.

Chalobah added: "It’s a tough moment. It’s only ourselves we can look at. We have injuries but we have to use the players we have and get through. We don’t want to complain.

"We have to work on what went wrong and look forward. Games are coming thick and fast. We have an important game on Thursday. We have to pick ourselves up and go again.

"We have to stick together, everyone in the dressing room, and keep positive."

Weghorst future down to Besiktas

Wout Weghorst has been strongly linked with Manchester United

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Wout Weghorst lie in Besiktas’ hands after the Turkish side confirmed his loan deal from Burnley does not include a break clause.

Netherlands international Weghorst has emerged as a surprise January target for the Red Devils, who are eager to bolster their options up front.

The towering striker has scored nine goals in 18 games since signing temporarily from Burnley last summer — just months after arriving at Turf Moor.

A club statement said: "The claim that there is an exit clause in our player’s contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of £2.2million in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.

"The news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas."

It is widely reported that Weghorst is keen on the switch to Old Trafford and hopes Burnley and Besiktas can come to an agreement to terminate his loan early.
