Stones throws spanner in Pep's plans

Manchester City defender John Stones has been ruled out until after September's international break, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Stones, 29, has yet to feature in the Premier League this term after suffering a muscle injury in pre-season.

The England man's wait to return will extend to after the season's first international break between September 4 and 12.

His involvement in the Three Lions' Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and a friendly with Scotland is also in doubt.

The Argentine midfielder was shown a straight red card by referee Thomas Bramall for a challenge on Ryan Christie mid-way through the second half.

Mac Allister, who arrived at Anfield from Brighton this summer, is set to miss Liverpool's next three games unless the club's appeal is successful.

Speaking about the decision after the game, manager Jurgen Klopp said: "We've seen harsher challenges that weren't red cards that should've been.

"If he said it was a yellow, the VAR wouldn't have upgraded to a red card.

"We've seen harsher challenges that weren't red cards that should've been. If he said it was a yellow, the VAR wouldn't have upgraded to a red card.

"Everything is lacking for a red card, the intensity. Yes, there was contact but there must be a different intention when it's a red card. We will talk to the people about it."

Paq-ing a punch

Lucas Paqueta scored in West Ham's win over Chelsea

West Ham boss David Moyes insists there was "never any doubt" about playing Lucas Paqueta against Chelsea after the Brazilian scored in a 3-1 win.

The 25-year-old is being investigated by the FA for potential betting breaches, which has led to a rumoured move to Manchester City being put on hold.

Paqueta was selected in Moyes' starting XI and put in an influential display before sealing the victory from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Moyes said: "He's a solid and tough character, so no problems.

"I thought 65,000 people stood to their feet and applauded him the whole game because of what he did.

"He went the whole way, played as well as anybody, showed character, never hid away from the ball ever. His performance was very, very good — especially in the second half.

McGinn for the kill

Aston Villa captain John McGinn was the Player of the Match in a 4-0 win over Everton

Unai Emery was full of praise for captain John McGinn after his starring display in Aston Villa's dominant victory over Everton.

The Scotland international scored the first goal in an impressive 4-0 victory over the Toffees at Villa Park as his side put their heavy opening-day defeat at Newcastle behind them.

Emery said of his 28-year-old skipper: "I'm very happy for him because he scored. He doesn't usually score a lot.

"He has to get into the box to get chances to score and he did that perfectly for the first goal, and his performance as well was very good today.

"He can play right side, left side, play inside. He's very important for us. Last week he didn't play well, but today was amazing."
