Henderson speaks

Jordan Henderson admits Steven Gerrard was a major factor behind his move from Liverpool to Saudi side Al-Ettifaq.

Former Reds captain Henderson, 33, left Merseyside for the Middle East last month — just a short time after fellow Kop icon Gerrard was appointed the as Dammam-based team's manager.

He said: "Stevie was a big reason why I came. To work with him and play under him.

"We need to be ready in the first week or so for the first game but I'm sure we will be. We've had some good training sessions.

"So hopefully we can keep moving things in the right direction and definitely work together to try to make the team better and more successful."

Captain James

Reece James has been appointed as Chelsea's new captain.

The Cobham academy graduate takes on the responsibility after Cesar Azpilicueta relinquished the armband when he joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer earlier this summer.

James, 23, said: "I'm so happy to take on the role. I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past but I am excited.

"I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the academy is tough.

"But to go on and become captain, it's a great feeling for me and my family."

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino added: "This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

"He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season.

"He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas."

Turn the page

Goalkeeper Matt Turner has completed his £10million move from Arsenal to Nottingham Forest.

The United States stopper, 29, has signed a four-year deal at the City Ground and could debut for Steve Cooper's side against his former employers at the Emirates on Saturday.

On the move to the Midlands, Turner said: "It is a great challenge and a great step in my career.

"The manager and the backroom staff, everything about the club has a little sparkle to it.

"It has felt right from the start and I'm happy it's got done."

Guaita wants out

Vicente Guaita has played 154 games for Crystal Palace since joining in 2018

Roy Hodgson has revealed goalkeeper Vicente Guaita refused to play for Crystal Palace in pre-season.

The Spanish stopper, 36, lost the No1 spot to Sam Johnstone towards the end of last term and now wants to return to Getafe, despite penning a one-year contract extension at Selhurst Park in January.

Palace boss Hodgson said: "Guaita is disenchanted with the club and has said he would like to move on. He's refused to play in our games so far.

"A complication is that he has a year's contract. It's up to the club to decide, not him. He's made it clear to everybody he doesn't want to be here and compete with Sam.

"When you sign a contract with a club, you commit yourself to what's needed at that club.

"I can't physically make Guaita play but it's not certain the club will let him go."

And Szoboszlai has revealed how he was well aware of the quality possessed by Jurgen Klopp's outfit after playing against them in the Champions League with Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.

The young playmaker said: "When I played against Liverpool you could see they have a lot of quality.

"I came here because I already loved the club even when I didn't play in front of the fans or in the stadium.

"I want to give my best, I want to do everything for the club, for the guys, for myself. And I want to win trophies."

Penalty buddies

England beat Nigeria on penalties to reach the World Cup quarter-finals

England midfielder Jordan Nobbs has heaped praise on the Lionesses who scored from the spot in Monday's World Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Nigeria.

Sarina Wiegman's side were locked at 0-0 with the Super Falcons after extra-time but prevailed on spot-kicks to reach the quarter-finals, with Chloe Kelly converting the decisive effort to set up a date with Colombia on Saturday.

Nobbs said: "It's always hard to sleep after a game but the girls that were taking the penalties were just unbelievable. We had a lot of faith but when it comes to penalties you never know what is going to happen.

"It's tough because you can't help. You obviously fully support them and shout when they score but apart from that you are just believing in them. We all stuck together throughout."

On her new friendship with Ella Toone, she added: "I've not spent loads of time with Ella before but it's been really nice on this trip as I have got to speak to her a lot more.

"That moment watching the penalties together shows how close we have got at this tournament, and I was just trying to keep her calm."
