A rare Conor Coady strike handed Wolves a 1-0 win over 10-man Everton at Goodison Park, leaving the Toffees above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The deadlock was not broken until early in the second half with Coady emphatically heading in Ruben Neves' right-wing cross.

Everton's hopes of a comeback were dented in the 78th minute when Jonjoe Kenny was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge on Raul Jimenez.

The victory sees Wolves keep pace with the top six in their pursuit of a European place, rising above Tottenham into seventh and just two points behind fifth-placed West Ham.

Coady emphasised the importance of the victory for Wolves and credited the team's mentality.

He said: "It was [a] massive [win]. We knew there was going to be a reaction. No matter what you say about them they are a top team and a top football club.

"It was important we came here with the right mentality and know that when the crowd gets up it’s tough to play against.

"We had to frustrate them at times and I thought we did it and got the goal in the second half which is fantastic.

"Three weeks ago we were kind of written off. It’s not something we talk about. We just enjoy playing football under our manager and if we keep doing that we’ll see where we are at the end of the season."

Everton defender Mason Holgate admitted that confidence was low as the Toffees continue to flirt with the relegation zone.

He said: "It is what it is. There’s no hiding place. There’s nothing we can do about it. We’ve got to dig deep.

"As a performance, it was a lot better than Monday night. I thought we showed spirit and fight but ultimately when you are down there you have to pick up points.

"We’re disappointed but we have to start winning games. If we don’t start winning games we have to start not losing games.

"Confidence is not going to be high due to results and where we are but we have to believe in ourselves.

"There is nowhere to hide and it’s time to step up. It seems to be at the moment other teams keep nicking it and things aren’t going our way.

"Games are coming thick and fast and we have to stay consistent in our performances and stay strong. We can’t change what has already happened.

"Nobody wants to get relegated no matter what club you’re at or what the history is. If you look at the squad we’ve got we shouldn’t be anywhere near here. There’s no hiding that but we are and we have to deal with it."

Wolves were much better than Everton in the second half, particularly after the sending-off

Did you know?

Since the turn of the year, only Liverpool have won more Premier League matches (eight) and points (25) than Wolves (seven wins, 21 points).

Since Frank Lampard’s first league game in charge of Everton in February, only Norwich (one) have earned fewer points than the Toffees' three.

Everton have 22 points from 26 league matches this season, their lowest-ever tally at this stage of any league campaign (since wins were worth three points).

Wolves have not conceded a first-half goal in any of their last 14 away games in the Premier League, the joint-longest such run by any side in the competition's history (Arsenal from September 1998 to April 1999).

Coady has scored three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions for Wolves this season, as many as he had managed in his previous 275 matches for the club over six seasons.

Kenny received Everton’s 100th Premier League red card, only the second club to be given as many after Arsenal (101).
