India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled out of the Third Test with England due to a family emergency.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news following the conclusion of the second day's play in Rajkot.

Ashwin had become only the ninth man in Test history to claim 500 wickets when he dismissed England opener Zak Crawley in the visitors' reply to India's first innings 445.

The BCCI statement said: "In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the team fully supports Ashwin.

"The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance.

"The board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time.

Ravichandran Ashwin scored 37 runs in India's first innings total of 445

"The board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed.

"Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period."

England finished day two on 207-2, thanks to Ben Duckett's unbeaten 133 off only 118 balls.

The five-match series is currently tied at 1-1 with India fighting back to win the Second Test after Brendon McCullum's side had edged the opening contest in Hyderabad.

India will not be able to replace 37-year-old Ashwin if he does not return to the field in Rajkot but will be permitted to use a substitute fielder.
