Andy Murray was delighted to pick up his first win of 2024 by beating Alexandre Muller in the first round of the Qatar Open.

The two-time Wimbledon winner, 36, ended a six-match losing streak by dispatching the Frenchman 6-1 7-6 (7-5).

It was his first victory since the Swiss Indoors Basel event in October 2023 and the world No50 let out a roar of relief after hitting the winning shot.

He said: "Obviously the last few months have been tough on the court for me, I've not won many matches and lost a lot of close ones as well.

"It was getting close at the end there but I am delighted to get through with so many people coming out to watch for a first-round match. 

"I am proud I managed to get through the match and get another win, very happy for my team who have been working hard and trying to find solutions. 

"Hopefully this is the start of a better run."

Murray will face 18-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik in the second round and is not underestimating one of the ATP Tour's brightest prospects. 

He added: "I saw a little bit of his match today, he's a very promising young player.

"He has a huge serve and moves well for a big guy. 

"He's new on the tour so every tournament and match will be a learning experience and a good opportunity. 

"I'll watch some videos and get a better idea of what I am facing. I've seen a little bit but not loads."
